A study of the effect of flavoured and non-flavoured sugar-free chewing gums with different sweeteners, on the pH level in mouth after eating a meal and the development of dental plaque”
This type of work is called Extended Essay. There is a certain way in which this work
should look like and I will write as many information as possible but the rest will be in
submitted guide.
The following work is supposed to be an extended research paper in chemistry on the
topic ,,A study of the effect of flavoured and non-flavoured sugar-free chewing gums
with different sweeteners, on the pH level in mouth after eating a meal and the
development of dental plaque”.
This is a title that I came up with, however it may be slightly modified if you wish to
do so.ln the attachment I am sending you guidelines for writing such work, as well as
the resources that I managed to gather. Of course, feel free to use even more
resources of different kinds, since this work is based on external sources, however
there has to also some personal work involved as well.
Since the aim of my work was to investigate the effect of pH, l have carried out an
experiment which also has to be included in my work as well as its results which I am
sending in the attachment. Description of the experiment: During this experiment, I
was investigating five chewing gums and for each gum l have carried out five
measurements of pH. l was measuring pH with a pH meter 5 minutes before the meal,
10 minutes after the meal, then I was chewing the gum for about 15-20 minutes and I
measured the pH again. Before each measurement, l have calibrated the pH meter
with three buffer solutions – one of pH 4, of pH 7 and of pH 10. To every
measurement, I used 5ml of my saliva. pH meter: +/- 0.02 pH. Saliva was measured
with the use of measuring cylinder for 1oml, +/- 0.5ml.After every measurement, pH
meter, as well as the cylinder was cleaned with the use of distilled water.
Even though this type of work is a part of a high school educational programme, the
guidelines suggest that it may in some parts contain academic level information.
The maximum words is 4,000. Title page, contents page, as well as abstract and
bibliography are compulsory. Bibliography and references are very important in this
work, that is why, every work cited has to be included in the bibliography. Theintroduction has to contain information why the topic is worth investigating, it should
contain references to important books, publications, and other resources that deal with
the topic. In the end of the introduction, I have to establish for the reader that the rest
of the essay is worth reading. Introduction should make clear how the research
question relates to existing knowledge on the topic and explained how the topic
chosen is significant.
The body paragraph should be presented in the form of a reasoned argument. it
should be clear for the reader what relevant evidence has been discovered,
where/how it has been discovered and how it support the argument. Sub-headings
are useful. The title should provide a clear indication of the focus of the essay. It
should be precise and not necessarily phrased in the form of a question. .Abstract
must not exceed 300 words. It presents an overview of the extended essay, and
should therefore be written last. The minimum requirements for the abstract are for it to
state clearly:
1. the research question being investigated
2. the scope of the investigation
3. the conclusion (3) of the extended essay
It should be written on the separate sheet of paper, after the title page.
Illustrations, graphs, or course can appear in the work but they have to be referred to
in the essay.
