Using your outline, develop your body paragraphs for Paper 2. You will want to practice different ways of developing your paragraphs, like providing a variety of ways to introduce material. You should include directly quoted material and paraphrased material. Both of these types of evidence need to be correctly introduced and documented.

Try to incorporate the evidence in your paragraphs using signal phrases from the previous commentary. Use at least one of the signal phrases to introduce a direct quotation or paraphrased material. The material you bring into the paragraph should be punctuated and documented correctly, for example, by providing quotation marks (for directly quoted material) and a parenthetical reference to show the source of the material. Note that a quotation within another quotation appears enclosed within single, not double, quotation marks.

Post one of your body paragraphs preceded by the thesis of your paper. The thesis is essential because I need to know the larger point of the essay before evaluating the body paragraph. Also keep in mind that the topic sentence should not repeat the phrasing of the thesis. Instead, you’ll want to make a “mini-argument”–one that advances a portion of the thesis. One way to do this is to bring down a word/synonym used in the larger thesis into the actual topic sentence.

Finally, remember–a body paragraph should attempt to develop a single topic in depth. Avoid a surface analysis.

  • The paragraph’s topic sentence (blue)
  • At least one signal phrase for evidence (green)
  • At least one area where you bring in your own commentary (such as your explanation or analysis of the evidence)(purple)
  • Identify at least one keyword that is present in the paragraph and that you use elsewhere in the paper to provide unity (brown)
