creating a playlist social stratification social class poverty gender race and ethnicity aging

Many popular songs are about social stratification, social class, gender, race, ethnicity, and aging. What are some examples of these songs and how they relate to the sociological concepts we studied in Weeks 5 & 6?

Rules:

– write the name of the song and artist. Provide a link to the song.

For example, Arctic Monkeys “Fluorescent Adolescent” URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7uQrXJ5nI8 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

– type or copy a specific section from the lyrics that refer to a concept we examined,

For example: “You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything’s in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary’s lacking in Tabasco
Remember when you used to be a rascal?”

– explain the connection.

For example (50 – 100 words):
“The song is about individual aging. As aging is a bio-social process, the song contrasts the social roles and statuses of youth and adulthood/older ages from the life course perspective. It also refers to gender roles, specifically how an adult/older woman is expected to be “nice” to maintain a network of supportive social relationships. We also observe the trajectory of changes in feminity and sexuality in youth (wearing fishnets, provocative behavior “used to be a rascal”) vs. adulthood (wearing a nightgown). Finally, the song also touches the substance abuse which is a common challenge for youth and older ages.”

Only respectful posts will earn points. If your song includes derogatory language when referring to gender, sexuality, race, or ethnicity, including curse words, slurs, and insults, you must censor those in the lyrics (for example, f***, n***** or b***). Explain the implications from the sociological standpoint.

Languages:You may choose a song a song that is in a language other than English. You must provide a translation for the section of the song you are discussing.

The discussion is open and visible to everyone in RS1500. You are welcome to like or comment, especially if you see the same song. However, you will not get points for stating “Agree, I wanted to write about the same song.” You can use the same song, different parts of the lyrics, and/or provide different explanations. Only 3 points will be granted. You either get all 3 for successfully completing the assignment, or 0 points for an incomplete or insufficient assignment.
