• Do you have an overview of the issue you are writing about?
• Do you introduce the main points of this issue?
• Do you have an identifiable thesis statement that states your argument?
• Is it clear what your direction for the essay is?

Body

• Do you have more than one body paragraph?
• Is it clear what each paragraph’s intent is?
• Do the paragraphs transition logically from one to the next?
• Do they clearly connect back to the thesis statement?
• Do they provide supportive evidence for your claim with credible sources?
• Do all sources have a proper in-text citation?
• Do you include opposing viewpoints to your argument?
• Do you refute these opposing viewpoints with evidence?

Conclusion

• Do you have a review of your argument?
• Do you have a summary of the main points you discussed in your body paragraphs?
• Do you discuss some new insight about your claims that follows logically from your argument? (In other words, are you actually concluding something from your argument, and is it clear what that is?)

Research Materials

• Have you added a cover page if you’re following APA formatting?
• Do you have a citation page?
