You are a U.S. citizen currently on a three-year assignment as the IT manager for your company’s Eastern European-located manufacturing plant. The company is a U.S.-based Fortune 1000 company, and the Eastern European plant employs 1,500 workers (referred to by the main office as “resources”). The plant budgeted for 250 new computers and associated software to replace all computers over six years old. The cost of the software licenses is $125,000 (USD). Unfortunately, the plant has not recovered from the recent worldwide financial crises, and you have been told that your department must reduce its budget by $100,000 (USD). You have been focusing on two options. The first is not to purchase all the software licenses needed and instead make illegal copies of existing software. (The software counterfeiting rate in the Eastern European country is 90 percent so the staff almost expects that they will use counterfeit software.) The second is to terminate the employment of two IT employees. You have identified who would be terminated based on their recent job performance and their relatively low level of anticipated future work activity. Address all of these:

1) Are the two options noted the only two? If not, what other options are there?

2) Regardless, what would you do?

3) Why?

4) Which philosophical approach(es) to ethics (Table 1-4 (see attachment)) are influencing your decision?
