PROJECT MATH STUDIES —–
The mathematical studies project is a piece of written work based on personal research involving the collection, analysis and evaluation of data. Each project should contain:
• a statement of the task
• measurements, information or data which has been collected and/or generated
• an analysis of the measurements, information or data
• an evaluation of the analysis
Students may choose from a variety of project types, for example, modeling, investigations, applications and statistical surveys. Historical projects which reiterate facts but have little mathematical content are not appropriate. These areas of study should relate to the students’ own interests and, although mathematical in nature, may be based in contexts such as sport, art, music, the environment, health, travel, trade and commerce.
Time in class can be used for general discussion of areas of study for project work: how data can be collected, where data can be collected, how much data should be collected, etc. etc.
The teacher will give appropriate guidance at all stages of the project by, for example, providing advice on the content and clarity of the project in the writing-up stage, but it should be clear that all the work connected with the project, including the writing of the project, should be students’ own work. The instructor, in order to ensure that the project is the authentic, personal work of the student may use the following method:
• discussion with the student
• asking the student to explain the methods used and summarize the conclusions
• asking the student to replicate part of the analysis using different data.
The project must be signed on completion to indicate it is the student’s own work. The project is internally assessed by the instructor and externally moderated by the IBO. It will be worth 20% of the final assessment from IBO. Each project will be assessed against the following criteria:
1. INTRODUCTION (defining what the student is going to do and how is going to do it)
2. INFORMATION/MEASUREMENT (data may be generated by computer, collected by observation, by investigation, or by experiment)
3. MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES (students are expected to make use of appropriate techniques: simple and sophisticated ones. For example when presenting diagrams, a freehand sketch would not be considered as a correct mathematical process)
4. INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS (students are expected to produce interpretations or conclusions)
5. VALIDITY (validity of results obtained from the processes used. Did the data and calculations support your task?)
6. STRUCTURE and COMMUNICATION (students are expected to have structured the project systematically using appropriate mathematical language and representation)
7. NOTATION and TERMINOLOGY ( project must be written with proper notation. For example x^2 is not accepted as x2.
For each assessment criterion, there are different levels of achievement. The final mark for each project is the sum of the scores for each criterion. The maximum possible final mark is 20.

Use simple sentences: remember it is math, not English literature
Use proper notation and terminology. For example x^2 is not correct it should be written x2.
