Bioethical issue that society is currently facing (in-depth analysis) – 20-25 pages

This project provides you with an opportunity to conduct an in-depth examination of a bioethical issue that society is currently debating. You will research an issue of your choice that has significant implications for public policy. As you develop this project, you will examine and document the rich contextual nature of the debate as it is conducted in the media, discussed in centers of learning, and reported in scholarly publications. You will document and chronicle all sides of the debate in a learning journal. Your journal will then provide the foundation for you to prepare a Bioethics Issues Position Paper that presents your position on the issue and the implications your position holds for society in general and medical sociology in particular.

A 20- to 25-page, double-spaced, response is required in APA format with references

Part A First, select a bioethics issue of interest to you and find at least five (5) articles or programs from the popular media debating the issue. These articles can be from the newspaper, health magazines, weekly news magazines, or television documentaries or programs. You are to log each article or program in your journal, including time, date, principals, and positions taken on the issue. You will submit your Research Journal along with your Position Paper. Be sure you cite your references correctly using APA style. (10 points each, 5 article entries or programs, 50 points total)

Each of the article entries must address the following points.
  1. A one-paragraph abstract of the article/program
  2. The positions taken with the justifications given
  3. Important concerns for the health practitioner or patient
  4. Your position and a brief justification

Part B Next, select five (5) scholarly articles on the issue. A good place to find relevant articles is the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature, The Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. You are to log each article or program in your journal, including time, date, principals, and positions taken on the issue. You will submit your Research Journal along with your Position Paper. Be sure you cite your references correctly. (20 points each, 5 scholarly article entries, 100 points total)

Each of the scholarly article entries must address the following points.
  1. A one-paragraph abstract of the scholarly article
  2. The conclusions and recommendations of the author
  3. The benefits or liabilities for the healthcare system or society in general claimed by the author
  4. Your position and justification

Part C The final step in the assignment is to prepare a Position Paper on your subject, formatted in APA style. The content of your paper must contain the following elements. (A 20- to 25-page, double-spaced response is required.) (150 Points)
  1. Cover Sheet
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Introduction to the Issue
  4. Research Summary (40 points)
    a. Summary of the popular media treatment of the issue
    b. Summary of the scholarly literature and research on the issue
  5. Comparative analysis of the issue as treated by the media and scholarly researchers (40 points)
  6. Presentation of all positions in the debate concerning the issue (40 points)
  7. Your conclusions and position on the issue along with your justification and a one-paragraph statement summarizing what you have learned from this project. (30 points)

Health care ethics

In each case, answer the questions at the end of the case and give researched references to support your assertions; also, explain what would be the ethical course of action and the legal requirements for action in the case.

Case One

Mary Stokes is in need of a kidney transplant, and her parents and siblings have been tested for compatibility. Her father is afraid of operations and knows that kidney trouble runs in the family. Before the test, Mary’s father tells the doctor that he does not want anyone, especially his wife, to know that he is compatible. He explains that if the family knows they will pressure him into being a donor. The father turns out to be the only one who is compatible. Mary asks the doctor, “Are you sure no one in my family is compatible?”

Is the father a patient and protected by confidentiality? Even if he is not a patient, is his explicit request, which was not refused, a protection of his confidentiality? If the matter is confidential, what can the physician say or do to protect the secret?

Case Two

Dr. Curious has a habit of wandering around the hospital and looking at the records of friends who are in the hospital. The nurses have tried to stop him, but he has retaliated by making their lives miserable and belittling them in public at every opportunity. The nursing administration has been notified but has done nothing, as it wants to avoid rocking the boat.

What are the nurses’ ethical obligations after they have done everything mentioned in the text? See Chapter 2 (Garrett). Is “not wanting to rock the boat” a sufficient excuse for the administration to do nothing further?

Submit answers in APA format.

Health settings

Questions 1:
Read the following scenario and respond to it as a risk manager.
Mr. And Mrs. Watros came to the Memorial Hospital for the delivery of their first child. While Mrs. Watros was in labor, the couple had to wait for nearly two hours to get a room. During that time, no hospital nurse attended to her. As the waiting room was full of patients, an exhausted Mrs. Watros sat on the floor. Mr. Watros reported this to a nurse. The nurse responded that it was past her shift, and she could do nothing.

These problems were later reported to a physician. The physician said, “It is just the way things go wrong here sometimes. You just have to get used to it.”

After delivery, the nurse carrying the infant slipped. The baby was unharmed. The explanation given was, “there was disinfectant fluid on the floor, which makes the floor a little slippery.”

On discharge, Mr. and Mrs. Watros decided to sue the hospital. The physician admitted negligence and poor treatment, but did not see a reason to apologize.
Put yourself in the position of all the people involved (as well as the hospital), and describe what could have been done differently.

Questions 2:

Would you support the idea that patient satisfaction ratings should be tied to reimbursement payments? Is this idea appropriate? As a risk manager, how might you respond to a nurse who says, “That’s not fair because some patients will never be happy”? How will you go about explaining the importance of this metric to staff?

Stem Cell Research Presentation

You have been asked to give a presentation on the benefits that embryonic stem cell research can yield in the treatment of chronic and life-threatening diseases to a group that opposes this research on moral and religious grounds. In preparing your presentation, you want to be sure that you convey accurate information on the potential benefits of this research, as well as, address the safeguards employed to minimize the risks of abusive use of the research. This activity is comprised two parts. Cite all sources using an APA-formatted bibliography with references.

Part A First, prepare a narrative outline of your presentation. The outline should include a description of at least three (3) potential medical benefits of embryonic stem cell research. It should also define how the stem cell will be obtained and how the research effort will provide safeguards against abuses.

Your outline should clearly communicate important information you want to share with the group, but it is not the text of your presentation. Your outline should help crystallize your thinking in order to focus your presentation on the important information you want to convey to your audience. (36 points) (A 1-page response is required.)

Part B This part of the activity requires you to anticipate the objections of your audience to embryonic stem cell research and constructively engage them. You are to identify four (4) objections likely to be raised by the audience and prepare your response to these objections. Your response should seek to advance understanding, not solidify or polarize positions. It should be persuasive without attacking or devaluing the opinions or positions of the audience. (64 points) (A 2-page response is required.)

Deliverable 2 – Models of Quality Improvement in Healthcare

Competency

Explain the basic models of quality improvement in healthcare.

Course Scenario

Chaparral Regional Hospital is a small, urban hospital of approximately 60 beds, and offers the following:

Emergency room services

Intensive care

Surgical care

Obstetrics

Diagnostic services

Some rehabilitation therapies

Inpatient pharmacy services

Geriatric services

Consumer physician referral services

Recently, the CEO has been hearing complaints from both patients and staff, varying from long wait times to rude physicians. You have been hired to design and implement a Quality Improvement Plan to help uncover quality problems and to satisfactorily resolve them.

Scenario Continued

The CEO has met with you to let you know that some members of the Board of Directors are questioning the value of developing a quality improvement plan. She has asked you to create an executive summary and an information sheet to be included in the next Board packet.

Instructions

Topics for the executive summary should include:

What is a Quality Improvement plan?

Why do healthcare facilities create improvement plans?

Why would you recommend the facility create and implement a QI plan?

NOTE – APA formatting for the reference list, and proper grammar, punctuation, and form required.

After completing the Executive Summary, you will create a one-page information sheet for the Board that they can use to answer questions about QI plans.

The information sheet should give your CEO and the Board of Directors enough information to have an educated conversation with patients and other stakeholders on the value of QI plans.

Make sure to use audience-specific language and tone on your information sheet. Remember, you are writing this information sheet for your CEO and the Board of Directors.

Be creative, and make your information sheet fun and organized.

1st Assignment

What do you believe are the primary advantages and disadvantages of having multiple revenue sources for health care services offered by an organization for planning and reporting purposes?

2nd assignment

This assignment will require you to consider several influences to the budgeting process of a health care institution. Here, you will review payer mix and other influences to revenue as you consider revenue factors for the budget. Complete the following for this assignment:

  • For a health care organization of your choice (real or hypothetical), describe the type of organization, and determine the payer mix of patients served (percentage of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, managed care, and private pay).
  • Take into consideration that reimbursement can be affected by the claims process, out-of-network payments, denials, audits, and legislation.
  • Assess the differences in health care budgeting as a result of these potential changes in the payer mix and payment methodologies as an outcome of the Affordable Care Act.
  • Take into consideration that while more patients may have insurance coverage, the out-of-pocket expenses will continue to create a potential uncollectable liability.
  • Evaluate how you would strategize to keep a balanced budget for all 12 months in a year using a flexible budget rather than a static budget, and provide rationale and justification.

The body of the resultant paper should be (5) pages and include at least 5 relevant academic or professional references published in the past 5 years.

Health Literacy

In order to effectively manage their own health, individuals need to have competencies in two areas—basic literacy and basic health literacy. What is the difference? Basic literacy refers to the ability to read, even simple language. Health literacy is defined as, “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” (National Coalition for Literacy, 2009). Unfortunately, according to a Department of Education report on health literacy, only 12% of adults aged 16 and older are considered to have a proficient level of health literacy (U.S. Department of Education, 2006). Acquiring health literacy skills has become more complicated with the explosion of online health information, some credible and some misleading.
In this Discussion, you focus on how to help individuals find credible information on the Internet and develop strategies nurses can use to increase the health literacy of their patients.
To prepare:
Think about the nurse’s role in improving the health literacy of patients.
Consider the many ways patients access health information, including blogs, social media, patient portals, websites, etc.
Reflect on experiences you have had with patients who self-diagnose using online medical sources.
Using the Internet, the Walden Library, or other trustworthy sources, identify a resource that you could introduce to patients to help them evaluate the credibility of health information found online.
What are some strategies you could employ to improve the health literacy of patients?
Post on or before Day 3 your assessment of the nurse’s role in improving the health literacy of patients. Then, identify the resource you would recommend to patients for evaluating online health information and why it would be beneficial. Describe additional strategies for assisting patients in becoming informed consumers of online health information.
