Concepts used in t Test

Question Description

This Discussion explores concepts you will use in a t test. You have been assigned a topic according to the first letter of your last name. Please identify the topic assigned to you below. For each topic, explain what it means and how it applies to the t test. Your initial response to the Discussion topic should be a minimum of 200 words. You should also provide at least two responses to your classmates that should be a minimum of 100 words. In your peer replies, you are encouraged to challenge responses to promote critical thinking on all sides of a discussion.

A variable is not only something that we measure, but also something that we can manipulate and something we can control for. Categorical variables are also known as discrete or qualitative variables. Categorical variables can be further categorized as either nominal, ordinal or dichotomous. Nominal variables are variables that have two or more categories, but which do not have an intrinsic order. Dichotomous variables are nominal variables which have only two categories or levels. Ordinal variables are variables that have two or more categories just like nominal variables only the categories can also be ordered or ranked. Continuous variables are also known as quantitative variables. Continuous variables can be further categorized as either interval or ratio variables.

Hello Class and Professor,

What is a t-test? This is an analysis of two populations means using statistical examination. A t-test with two samples is commonly used with small sample sizes and is testing the difference between the samples when the variances of two normal distributions aren’t known. This population mean is not always known, but is sometimes hypothesized. Paired sample, also known as a dependent sample, are in which natural or matched couplings occur. In a circumstance in which each data point in one sample is matched sometimes to a data point in the second sample.

When this test is performed people are usually trying to find evidence of a significant difference between population means (2-sample t) or between the population mean and a hypothesized value (1-sample t). The t-value measures the size of the difference relative to the variation in your sample data.
