1) DISCUSSION POST

The Cost of Economic Growth

In Chapter 7: The Environment – Part II, Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss the existing tension between development and the environment. Development brings economic growth as well as social and environmental changes. To a developing country, economic growth may be of a higher priority than the consequences to the long-term health of its citizens or its environment. On the other hand, poverty can also harm the environment such as how searching for land to farm contributes to deforestation.

Do wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have responsibilities to the people and environment of that country? Why or why not? Be sure to use examples of existing companies to support your response.

2)PEER REVIEW #1 (ANIKA)

Hello Class and Professor,

I personally feel that wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have the responsibility to the people and environment of that country. I think in any situation that once one has made it they should not forget how they got there and look at for that less fortunate and not forget how they got to where there are. If no one never looks out for the ones developing how will they continue to perform the labors that are making other healthy. But I have said this many times that until someone of power or in this circumstance wealth doesn’t take the initiative to help the developing countries how will they ever get ahead. It takes a lot to get advanced but until one/nations provide some type of assistance, whether it is financially, or better health options, providing some technology advances, or even jobs the developing companies will not continue much longer. Climate change is already hindering not only underdeveloped countries it affects all areas but when you don’t have the means to adjust you, it becomes a matter of how to survive. This is why the wealthy need to make sure the areas that provided for them are taken care of so they can continue to make them money.

3) PEER REVIEW #2 (TYRONE)

Hello Everyone,

I do believe that wealthy nations using the labor of developing nations have the responsibility to the people of whatever country they are operating in. I believe that any company would be doing a disservice to themselves for one if they don’t take care of the people and their environment that they are operating in. What happens when those people and the environment become unhealthy to operate in? Just pack up and move? I don’t think so. A business should do everything in their power to make certain that the environment and those people are well taken care of. Waste, pollution control, health hazards, etc. should all be managed effectively. I did a presentation on Nike a couple of semesters ago and I learned that at the beginning of Nike using “sweatshops” in the late ’80s to early ’90s conditions were horrible They have since cleaned up their act and have plenty of policies and procedures in place to make sure they are all doing their part in supporting the people and environment of the countries that they utilize.
