For your first reflection paper, presuming you’ve read through Book 1, Parts 1 and 2 (up through page 146 – suggested reading from weeks 1 & 2), think about the slogan “ALL THAT HAPPENS MUST BE KNOWN” regarding SeeChange. Do you see any parallels with any organizations or technologies in reality?

Also, what do you think Mercer meant by, “The tools you guys create actually manufacture unnaturally extreme social needs. No one needs the level of contact you’re purveying. It improves nothing. It’s not nourishing. It’s like snack food. You know how they engineer this food? They scientifically determine precisely how much salt and fat they need to include to keep you eating. You’re not hungry, you don’t need the food, it does nothing for you, but you keep eating these empty calories. This is what you’re pushing. Same thing…endless empty calories, but the digital ­social equivalent. And you calibrate it so it’s equally addictive.”?

Note: The Circle is 500 pages. There are at most 2 pages of content that contain adult situations (expressed in PG­13 terms) that are relevant to the plot. If these small segments are a problem for you please contact your professor to discuss alternate options.
