Watch the following video of Wynton Marsalis’s lecture at Harvard University, “The Melting Pot.” Summarize Marsalis’s narrative of the Blues as it pertains to the creation of all types of North American music throughout history. What are some of the specific instances (styles of music, moments in history, etc.) that he mentions.

Describe the interaction between Marsalis and violinist Mark O’Connor as they perform together near the end of this clip. As they trade phrases back and forth, what do you notice about the amount of time each takes when it’s his “turn”? Does it change/stay the same? What do you notice about their playing when one ends a phrase and the other begins? You can also comment on their use of rhythm, melodies (high notes vs. low notes, for example), and energy.

Compare to a conversation between two people. What is an example of a conversation scenario that this musical episode might portray?
